The power of our decisions

By: Mónica Lewin, Licensed Psychologist

I have often heard that someone was lucky in life, or that everything came easily because they were born into a financially comfortable family.

External conditions do exist, and sometimes luck favours us more than at other times.

When we study someone's life over time in more detail, we realise that the decisions made throughout life matter more than the external conditions into which they were born.

For example, if we eat everything we fancy and do not exercise, we will probably gain weight and eventually develop health problems. If we decide to eat appropriately and exercise, we help our body remain healthy for many years.

When we learn to set aside immediate gratification and wait, we can achieve something better, even if it takes a little longer.

Our decisions, rather than our circumstances, determine our destiny.

To achieve the results we want, let us look closely at the decisions we make.

External conditions have little influence on a person's achievements in life.

What we decide and the actions we take have greater influence.

Anyone can do what they set out to do if they make decisions that lead them there.

Making a decision is more than thinking about it: it means cutting off every other possibility and focusing wholeheartedly on the desired result.

It means taking the right actions that move us towards where we want to go.

We literally become what we focus on doing most of the time.

If we realise along the way that something is not working, let us do something else. If we keep doing the same thing, we will get the same results.

Everyone has the power to create a magnificent future by setting and achieving powerful goals.

There is no point in stating what you do not want, because you will achieve it unintentionally.

Please do not think of a blue bird. Do not think of a blue bird.

What comes to mind? Probably a blue bird.

The unconscious skips the “not” and takes our thoughts literally.

The first step is to state goals positively, going directly towards what we want to achieve and imagining it clearly and in specific detail.

The second step is to create an action plan to reach our goals.

Imagine them vividly and enjoy them emotionally twice a day to stay motivated and on the right path.

Always remember that achieving the goal matters, but the quality of life we experience along the way matters much more.
