What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?
By: Mónica Lewin, Licensed Psychologist
NLP studies how people communicate with themselves and others in ways that create highly resourceful states, producing the greatest possible range of behavioural options.
It develops the ability to be your best self more often.
It is a powerful, rapid path to personal change.
These are some of the presuppositions of Neuro-Linguistic Programming:
- The map is not the territory. Our mental maps of the world are not the world itself. We respond to our maps more than to the real world. It is easier to change our maps regarding emotions and thoughts than to try to change the real world.
- Every experience has a structure. Our thoughts and memories have a structure; when we change it, our experience changes. For example, we can neutralise painful memories and enrich useful ones.
- If one person can do something, anyone else can learn to do it.
- Mind and body are part of the same system. Our thoughts influence muscle tension, breathing and emotions, which in turn affect our thoughts. Changing any of these aspects changes the others.
- People have all the resources they need. By using our mental images, inner voices, sensations and emotions correctly, we can connect with these resources.
- You cannot not communicate. We are constantly communicating, verbally or non-verbally. Our gestures communicate, and our thoughts are communication with ourselves.
- The meaning of communication is the response you get. Others receive what we say and do. When someone understands something different from what we said, we have an opportunity to adjust our communication so it is clearer next time.
- Every behaviour has a positive intention.
- If what you are doing does not work, do something else. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will get the same results. If you want something new, do something new.
